What is PFAS – and how can you protect yourself?
PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are harmful substances that don't break down easily. They are found in many everyday products – and increasingly in drinking water. Here's how to reduce your exposure, and how the Brita Purity C1000 helps remove PFAS from tap water effectively.
What are PFAS?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals used for their water, oil and stain-resistant properties. They are found in cookware, clothes, packaging and more – and persist in nature for decades.
Why are they called "forever chemicals"?
Because PFAS don't degrade naturally. They accumulate in soil, water, wildlife – and even human blood. They have been detected worldwide, including in rain, food and drinking water.
PFAS in drinking water
Contamination often occurs near industrial sites or airports due to firefighting foam and waste. Once PFAS enter the water supply, activated carbon water filters are the most cost-effective and reliable solution.
Are PFAS dangerous?
Some PFAS are linked to cancer and hormone disruption. The EU has already banned several, and new limits are being introduced for food and water from 2023 to 2026.
How to reduce your PFAS exposure
-
Avoid non-stick Teflon pans
-
Use fluorine-free sprays and waterproofing
-
Choose waxed or untreated fabrics
-
Avoid take-away containers
-
Use a carbon water filter for PFAS removal
PFAS in water – and how to filter it out
Activated carbon filters are proven to reduce PFAS, especially PFOA and PFOS – the most well-known and harmful compounds in the group.
