Ocher filter - Reducing colour and smell from the water
Ochre is a naturally occurring soil type that can be either yellow, red or brown. For many years, ochre has been used to decorate caves, walls and facades. Ochre is not toxic to humans but it is to animals, and especially in Jutland, ochre poisoning in streams and creeks is a major problem. (read more at bottom)
Before investing in an ocher kit, we recommend having a water sample taken, as e.g. manganese - which cannot be filtered with ordinary filters, can also cause yellowish water.

Ochre consists of iron and sulphur and lies in the soil, where it can "smoulder" for many years without changing. If the ochre comes in contact with oxygen, it turns red. The red ochre is able to bind water molecules and when that happens, the colour changes to yellow.
We have brought this ochre pollution upon ourselves, as until 1985 it was allowed to let ochre run into streams when areas containing iron were drained. This was changed so that sensitive areas with high iron contents had to be approved for drainage to avoid discharge to streams and creeks, as the ochre simply exterminates wildlife due to its low pH value.
Why do you need an ochre filter?
As mentioned, ochre is not dangerous to us humans, so you should not be afraid of it if you experience that your drinking water contains ochre. However, ochre in the water is not exactly a charming characteristic, as you will experience discolouration, bad taste and strong smell due to its low pH value. And if after bathing you experience that your hair turns green, it is a sure sign that your water contains ochre.
An ochre filter can remove smell, bad taste and discolouration. The filter is installed onto the water pipe that enters your home. If you do not have access to this water pipe, you may also install the filter to the pipe leading up to the tap.
Different filters for different solutions
We have several different ochre filters to suit different solutions. An ochre filter can be used in private homes but is also useful and effective for larger needs such as restaurants. An ochre filter of 28 l/min. is suitable for a household of 2-4 persons. You should be aware that an ochre filter does not remove calcium; if calcium is the problem in the household, you should go for a water softener system.
