Test equipment – Pool & Spa

Measuring and testing equipment for pool and spa - pH - Cyanide - Chlorine - Alka

To ensure high quality in your bathing water, you must add several different types of products. But to find out what amount to add to the water in your pool or hot tub, you need to test the water.

You can test the water in several ways – either with test strips, a hand shaker or a photometer.

You should test your water at regular intervals to detect any problems and then adjust your bathing water. Most often, pH value (pHenol red tablet), Free chlorine (DPD no. 1 tablet), Total chlorine (DPD no. 3 tablet), Alkalinity (ALKA-M tablet) & Cyanide (Cyanuric acid tablet) are measured.

Testing Water Quality in Pool & Spa

Testing the water quality in pools and spas is essential to ensure safe and comfortable bathing water. Here is a basic guide on how to test water quality and what parameters to pay attention to:

  1. Important Parameters for Water Quality

    • pH Level: Ideally, the water's pH level should be between 7.0 and 7.4. A pH within this range ensures that the water is neither too acidic nor too basic, which can affect the effectiveness of disinfectants and bathing comfort.
    • Chlorine Content (or other disinfectants): Chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. For pools, a chlorine level of 1-3 ppm (parts per million) is recommended, while spas often require higher levels due to the higher water temperature.
    • Total Alkalinity: Measured in ppm, alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 ppm. This helps stabilize the pH level.
    • Calcium Hardness: To prevent damage to the pool or spa surface and equipment, calcium hardness should be between 200 and 400 ppm for pools and slightly higher for spas.
    • Cyanuric Acid: Used in chlorine-treated pools as a stabilizer, its level should be between 30-50 ppm to prevent chlorine from being broken down by sunlight.
  2. Testing Methods

    • Test Strips: These are quick and easy to use. Dip them in the water, and compare the color changes to a scale to read the values.
    • Liquid Reagent Kits: These kits often provide more accurate results than test strips. You add a sample of pool water to a measuring cup and then add a specific amount of reagent. The color change is then read against a color scale.
    • Digital Tester: For those seeking more precise measurements, digital testers are a good choice. They can provide quick and accurate readings of multiple water quality parameters.
  3. Frequency of Testing

    • Pools: It is recommended to test the water at least once a week for private pools and daily for public pools.
    • Spas: Due to the higher temperature and higher level of use, it is recommended to test spa water more frequently, preferably daily.
  4. Maintenance Based on Test Results

Once you have the test results, you can adjust the water quality by adding the necessary chemicals to bring the values within the recommended ranges. This may include adjusting the pH level, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, and adjusting alkalinity and calcium hardness.

  5. Using Guides

If you are unsure how to handle the results or if you experience persistent problems with water quality, it might be a good idea to consult guides from Wendt & Sørensen / Filter-Online. When you purchase a product for pool and spa, a guide often comes with it that tells you about the ideal values in your pool and spa, and what to do to get closer to these values.

Maintaining correct water quality is not only important for bathing comfort but also to extend the life of your pool or spa and its equipment. Regular testing and proper chemical balance are key to a safe and inviting water environment.
