Water treatment for Espresso & Coffee Machines

Water mineralization can affect the taste of coffee, espresso, tea and many other beverages worldwide.

With APRO 100 PRO, Aquaphor & Filter-Online has chosen to focus specifically on coffee and espresso and therefor developed an innovative system with water mineralization.

The water is an important ingredient in the coffee and it is also responsible for absorbing the extracts from the coffee beans. It is a necessity to maintain a high quality of water, because even a small amount of impurities can have a decisive effect on the final coffee taste.

With this water filter for espresso and coffee, you can impact the level of mineralization in the water, and in this way finding the perfect balanced water for your hot beverage.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technique that can be used to improve water quality, which can have a positive impact on your coffee. The RO process works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove impurities and minerals, resulting in cleaner and better-tasting water.

Here are some ways reverse osmosis can enhance your coffee:

  1. Removal of Impurities: The RO process removes many impurities, including chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, metals, and bacteria from the water. This results in a clearer and purer taste in your coffee, as these substances can typically affect the aroma and flavor of coffee.
  2. Adjustable Mineral Content: RO units allow you to adjust the mineral content of the water, which is crucial for coffee brewing. You can add precise amounts of minerals to the treated water, giving you control over extraction and coffee flavor.
  3. Consistent Water Quality: With RO water, you get a more consistent water quality regardless of the water source. This is important because the chemical composition of water can vary significantly from place to place, which can impact the taste of coffee.
  4. Extended Equipment Lifespan: The use of RO water can also help extend the lifespan of your coffee brewing equipment. It reduces the buildup of minerals and scale deposits in the equipment, which can, in turn, improve performance and durability.

The correct composition of water for the right composition of coffee

Coffee is a beverage that millions of people around the world must consume every morning to start the day well. It can be enjoyed at the breakfast table at home or as a to-go option at a gas station on the way to work – maybe you're even lucky to have a coffee machine at your workplace?

Do you perhaps have a barista hidden within you, juggling different coffee varieties in your kitchen, or do you work with coffee every day? If yes, you probably care a lot about using the right coffee bean to achieve the rounded coffee flavor you desire – one that you'd like to serve to your guests or customers.

In addition to the coffee bean, water is a significant part of a cup of coffee. A cup of coffee typically consists of 95-99% water – so when you think a lot about which coffee bean to use, do you also consider how your water should be?

If the answer is no, you're certainly not alone. Many takes water for granted and use tap water, which in many cases can be good – but in just as many cases, it may not be.

In many countries, tap water is often very high in calcium or contains residues from viruses, heavy metals, chlorine, or bacteria, which may come from the water itself or could be foreign particles from the pipes.

If you live in a high-calcium area, you may already be using some form of calcium filter – either for the taste of the water or to protect your expensive coffee machine from the calcium.

Remove unnecessary substances with reverse osmosis

It's one thing to remove calcium from the water, but with reverse osmosis, you can remove almost everything in the water – including chlorine, viruses, bacteria, nitrate, heavy metals, zinc, nickel – and this is just to name a few. All these impurities could otherwise end up in the water you use for coffee.

The process works as follows: The water first passes through some filters that pre-filter the water, removing larger residues and impurities before the water reaches the sensitive membrane in the reverse osmosis system, where the water is then completely purified of impurities.

Some content contributes to the taste of the water, and you may not want to completely remove this taste but rather play with it to find the right combination of membrane-filtered drinking water and non-membrane-filtered drinking water.

AQUAPHOR APRO 100 PRO for HoReCa

Now you can adjust this with the help of APRO 100 PRO. All you must do is adjust the button on the front of the system. This way, you adjust the smart bypass that the system contains. It gives you all possible options to find the setting and taste of water that suits you. You can let all the water pass through the membrane, bypass the membrane, or choose something in between. You can let 75% pass through the membrane and 25% bypass – it's entirely up to you, as you know your coffee best.

APRO 100 PRO is a smart plug-and-play reverse osmosis system that is easy to connect to your current water system. The entire system is connected by JG connections, making installation a breeze.

Included in the set is the APRO 100 PRO system itself, but there are also 2 pre-filters included that are connected as a DUO variant. In one filter housing, there is a 5µm depth filter, and in the other, there is an activated carbon filter that can capture odors and aftertastes before the water reaches the reverse osmosis system.

The set also includes couplings and hoses that are needed to connect to your current system.

It doesn't get much simpler to get clean and drinkable water for your tea and coffee.

High calcium content in the water? – Softening of the water is required

A reverse osmosis system, with all its advantages and features, is almost a magical system. However, a membrane in a reverse osmosis system has a single major enemy: calcium! Calcium-rich water can damage the membrane in a very short time, and Filter-Online therefore recommends installing a calcium filter or a water softener in front of APRO 100 PRO. This is simply to protect the membrane and ensure that the membrane's lifespan is maintained.

A calcium filter, for example, from Brita, is easy to install and not so expensive to purchase but should be replaced every 3-6 months, depending on the hardness of the water, which, of course, increases maintenance costs.

A water softener can be expensive to purchase, but in return, maintenance costs are low since salt is the primary cost here. It is therefore a matter of personal preference which solution you choose, but in the long run, the water softener will be the best and most cost-effective solution.

Advantages of APRO 100 PRO

The benefits of ultra-pure water are many – in addition to those already mentioned, we have listed below some we believe are essential:
