Why should you buy a filter for your espresso machine?
When a filter is connected to your espresso machine, it means that an extra joint is installed between the water and machine. That way, the filter ensures that limestone, bacteria, bad odor and taste are retained. Retaining the limestone means that the espresso machine is not calcified, which has three impacts: The machine has a longer service life (limestone is rough on materials); your coffee becomes hotter because no limestone is eroding the kettles of the machine, and your coffee will have an improved taste because there is no more limestone in the water.
Filters for private and business purposes
The filter has different needs, depending on your choice of espresso machine. For business purposes, the espresso machine will often require nozzles, which also requires a filter for the purpose of ion exchanges (do we have an article on this subject?) (see our BRITA ST filters) and a certain capacity when it comes to water consumption. For private households, less is okay as the machine rarely has a nozzle, just as your water consumption is much less than at a cafe or restaurant. For private households, the filter will require a casing, which means that the limestone will be cluttered and retained. This is a simpler technique than the ion exchange but correlates well with the needs for private consumption.
Do you need an espresso machine filter?
If you are having doubts whether or not to use a filter, which retains limestone and bacteria from your espresso machine, you only need to know that the hardness of the water should be between 4 and 8 dH (link to article about this). Nevertheless, many places in e.g Denmark, the hardness of the water is much higher. In Frederiksberg, a hardness of up to 30 dH has been metered. The thing is that in Denmark the water is typically too hard, which is why we ingest more limestone than we should. In reality, the answer is rather simple: everyone should have a filter installed, which retains all limestone, not only for your own sake, but for the sake of the machines you have in your private household.
